Editorial Policy
AWE, acronym for A Woman’s Experience, is an annual journal of BYU Women’s Studies and is co-published by the College of Humanities and College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences.  Founded in 2011, the journal provides an opportunity for interdisciplinary investigation into all aspects of a woman’s experience in the academy and elsewhere.

AWE welcomes submissions from current undergraduate and graduate students from BYU and other universities that are engaged with historical treatments of women’s inclusion and exclusion in political, social, and cultural institutions, theoretical considerations of how gender potentially complicates, elucidates, or changes these fields, and explorations of women’s experiences in the contemporary, global world. Each issue contains approximately 6-8 articles and 6-8 works of original creative writing or artwork.  Submissions may include 8-10 page scholarly articles in MLA format, creative writing, or original artwork. These submissions should be accompanied by the name of a faculty mentor willing to vouch for the quality and originality of the work and to mentor the student in the revision process for publication.

AWE is a student-run journal with two managing co-editors and five publication teams (submissions, copy-editing, reference-editing, graphic design, and artistic direction) comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a faculty advisor selected by the executive committee of the BYU Women’s Studies program. The journal is published in conjunction with this organization’s annual academic conference and is committed to publishing outstanding student work presented at this venue, as well as other pieces submitted independent of this event.

AWE seeks student essays, stories, poems, and visual art that consider women’s lives and gender as a category.  Articles should be between 8 and 12 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, and formatted according to MLA’s most recent guidelines or follow the accepted style guide in the respective field/genre.  These articles should take up women’s studies from a unique angle, be clear and interesting to read, and contribute something new to the academic conversation about women.

AWE also seeks creative works:  original fiction, poetry, or artwork that relates to or portrays women in insightful ways.

Each submission should be sent as an e-mail attachment to:  byuwsj@gmail.com.  The text of the e-mail addressed to the managing editors should contain the author’s name, educational institution, year in school (i.e. junior, senior, graduate student), paper title, contact information (e-mail and phone number), and a brief sentence or two regarding the general topic of the article or creative work submitted.  The e-mail should also contain the name and contact information for a faculty advisor who is willing to vouch for the strength of your paper within your discipline and mentor you on its revision for publication, if necessary (please ask your faculty advisor for permission before including them here).
